Exercise 1: Conversation exercise

Instruction:

Jaki rząd ma Twój kraj? (What government does your country have?)
Czy w twoim kraju istnieje rodzina królewska? (Does there exist a royal family in your country?)
Czy poszedłeś do wojska? (Did you go to the army?)
Kiedy są wybory? (When are the elections?)

Teaching guidelines +/- 10 minutes

Example phrases:

7 lipca głosowaliśmy na nowego prezydenta i rząd.

The 7th of july we voted for a new president and government.

Król jest głową państwa.

The king is the head of the state.

Ostatni rząd składał się z 3 partii politycznych.

The last government consisted out of 3 political parties.

Rząd jest kontrolowany przez parlament i sędziów.

The government is controlled by the parliament and judges.

Musiałem iść do wojska tak jak wszyscy moi przyjaciele.

I had to go to the army just like all my friends.

Nie poszedłem do wojska, ale zamiast tego przez rok pracowałem w organizacji społecznej.

I did not go to the army but I worked in a social organisation for a year instead.

Premier zmienił się od ostatnich wyborów.

The prime minister changed since the last elections.

Does the Senate have similar duties?

- Tak, ale jego rola jest przede wszystkim kontrolna i poprawcza.

Yes, but its role is primarily supervisory and corrective.

- Kto stoi na czele rządu?

Who is the head of the government?

- Premier kieruje pracą rządu.

The Prime Minister directs the work of the government.

- A jaki jest zakres obowiązków Prezydenta?

What are the responsibilities of the President?

- Prezydent reprezentuje państwo i ma kilka ważnych uprawnień.

The president represents the state and has several important powers.

- Jeszcze się zastanawiam, ale chcę podjąć mądrą decyzję.

I'm still considering it, but I want to make a wise decision.

Example 1

- Czy wybory są zawsze powszechne i bezpośrednie?

Are elections always universal and direct?

- Tak, każdy obywatel ma prawo głosować osobiście.

Yes, every citizen has the right to vote in person.

- A co z głosowaniem korespondencyjnym?

What about postal voting?

- To wygodna opcja dla osób, które nie mogą pójść do lokalu wyborczego.

This is a convenient option for people who cannot go to the polling station.
